Château d’Urspelt
** This blog post is part of a sponsored collaboration between Travels with Kayy and Château d’Urspelt **
The Hotel
Château d’Urspelt is the most picturesque four-star hotel in the world. This beautiful castle turned 57-room hotel and spa offers a truly luxurious experience in the northern region of Luxembourg. When traveling to Urspelt and staying in it’s castle, one wouldn’t even need to leave the hotel grounds to have a great experience. The château has everything you would ever need, from an onsite French restaurant, several bars and lounges, a spa and a pool. There are, of course, many phenomenal things to see and do as well, should you want to venture out, but first let’s take a look at everything Château d’Urspelt has to offer within it’s walls.

The Location
Found in the small town of Urspelt, just outside of Clervaux, Château d’Urspelt is in a perfect location for a secluded retreat in Luxembourg. This is not a place to go for busy tourists looking for a high-energy, quick-paced vacation. No, this is a place to come when you want to relax and unwind in luxury. Are there tourist activities nearby? Yes, of course! However, you would be missing out if you didn’t spend time escaping the bustle of life at the NUXE Spa or the outdoor pool for a while. After you are fully relaxed though, Château d’Urspelt is the perfect base from which to explore when you are ready to dive deeper into the small, yet gorgeous and history-filled country of Luxembourg!
Getting To Château d’Urspelt
Getting to the hotel is easiest via car. If you live nearby, you can, of course, bring your own vehicle. For those who need to come by plane, it is best to fly into Luxembourg Airport and rent a car from there. It is less than an hour drive and goes by very quickly. International visitors should have no problem navigating the roads here. Parking at Urspelt Castle is free and plenty of space is available!
Public transportation via train is possible from the Luxembourg Central Train Station to Clervaux. However, a taxi would need to be arranged to Château d’Urspelt. Note that as of August 2023, shared ride services, such as Lyft or Uber, are not available in Luxembourg.
The History
You can’t visit a place like Château d’Urspelt without first learning a bit about it’s history. The castle seen today is over 300 years old. The current building was built on ruins even older, from the 13th century. During World War II, the castle was used as a hospital and command post. It’s occupants eventually abandoned it when Luxembourg gained it’s independence from the German’s in 1944 post-WWII. Freddy Lodomez restored the castle in 2005 and it was officially opened as a hotel in 2008, with an expansion to what exists now occurring in 2016. The Rooms
Each room at Château d’Urspelt is steeped in luxury, from the beds to the bathrooms. The hotel offers five different room options. The most simple option, yet still elegant and classy, is a Castle Room located on the ground floor, which is suitable for two people. A more luxurious upgrade will get you a Superior Room, also appropriate for two, with a beautiful, open bathroom featuring a gorgeous clawfoot bathtub.
There are two different type of suites available – Executive and Grand Ducal Suites – at Château d’Urspelt. Executive Suites are found in the towers of the castle and sleep up to four guests. Meanwhile, the Grand Ducal Suite sleeps two, yet boasts 100 meters of space spanning five different rooms, including a dining area and lounge with a fireplace!
For a family or large group of up to seven individuals, the Castle’s Dependence may be your cup of tea. This is a separate apartment featuring 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and separate living spaces.

Prices
With breakfast included for two, Castle Rooms start at 146€ EUR per night, while Superior Rooms start at 198€ EUR per night. Executive Suite prices begin at 259€ EUR per night and the Grand Ducal Suite starts at 496€ EUR per night. The Castle Dependence will start at 449€ EUR per night. Price varies throughout the year. The weekends are especially busy at Urspelt Castle, and therefore may cause an increase in nightly rates. Visit the hotel’s website to check the most updated prices and book your next stay!

Château d’Urspelt offers a number of inclusive packages that can be booked on the hotel’s website in advance. The Amenities
The amenities are Urspelt Castle’s most prized possession! There are many options for both gastronomy and relaxation. You will never run short of things to do during your time in Urspelt.
Food & Drink
Château d’Urspelt has a beautiful French Restaurant onsite, open for dinner every evening between 6pm and 9pm. Single plates, as well as two, three, and four-course meals are available, in addition to an extensive wine list! Single dishes start at 35€ EUR and a glass of wine starts at 9€ EUR. Reservations are required for dinner. The breakfast buffet is served in a seperate eating area near reception between the hours of 7am and 10am. Lunch and snacks can be had at the Library, a indoor seating area that also serves as a bar and bookshop to purchase souviners, between 10am and 6pm. You can also be served from the Library in the outdoor courtyard during these times. Lastly, two additional bars can be found onsite: the Pool Bar, named appropriately for it’s location by the pool, and the “U” Lounge, which is a unique spot found in the old cellars of the castle.

NUXE Spa
NUXE Spa is where you want to go for an incredibly unique experience at Château d’Urspelt. 60€ EUR will gain you entry into the spa, where you will be greeted by a whirlpool, sauna, steam room, fitness center, salt wall, and an area of relaxation with hot tea. Most impressive, is the Red Cavern Pool, in which you can swim around and explore to your hearts content (and maybe even get a bit lost while doing so!). Treatments can, of course be booked at NUXE Spa, though they are not included in the entry fee. Massages, Facials, Body Treatments, and Float Therapy are all available at an additional cost. Be sure to book your treatments in advance, as they book up quickly throughout the day!

Outdoor Pool & Other Amenities
The outdoor pool is another highly coveted amenity at Château d’Urspelt. Many guests will be found lounging by the pool, grabbing a drink at the bar, or swimming during the open hours of 8am and 8pm. There are also plenty of outdoor areas, including a heated patio, to relax, have a drink or even sit by a fire!

Activities
There is plenty to see and do within a short distance from Château d’Urspelt. A car will serve you best when exploring the region. However, the hotel does offer electric scooter rentals for closer activities.

Entry is free to this monastary from the early 1900s. Lastly, there is a recreation area and a few notable museums that may be worth a visit during your stay.
Vianden
Vianden is the perfect half-day trip from Château d’Urspelt! Two stand-out activities are only a short, 25-minute drive from the hotel: Vianden Castle and the Vianden Chairlift. Roundtrip tickets cost 9 € EUR.

Luxembourg City
For a full day trip, consider visiting Luxembourg City, approximately 55 minutes from Château d’Urspelt. Many activities here are possible. Most notable is the free Panoramic Elevator of the Pfaffenthal, Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art (tickets cost 8€ EUR; open every day except Tuesday, between 10am – 6pm), Bock Casemates (tickets cost 8€ EUR; open every day, between 10am – 5pm), Palais Grand-Ducal (tickets cost 15€ EUR, open only between the months of July and September), Cathédrale Notre-Dame Luxembourg (open for visitors Monday-Saturday between 8am – 6pm), and the Luxembourg Old Town and Gare Quarters.
