An Itinerary for 24 Hours in Portland, Maine
April 24, 2019 /
Don’t have much time in Portland but still want to make the most of it? It’s a small city but there is still plenty to do and see! Here is my list of must-sees if you only have 24 hours in Portland, Maine.
Where do I stay?
Portland Harbor Hotel
This four-star hotel is right on the waterfront, giving over half their guests views of the water. The rooms have a luxurious but cozy feel to them and the best part? This accommodation is moderately priced for the location and quality. It’s perfect for a one-night stay, but honestly, you will want to stay for much longer .
Where do I eat?

DiMillo’s on the Water
Unlike the Portland Harbor Hotel, DiMillo’s is a bit pricey. However, the experience is unlike any other. This restaurant is literally on a boat, in the water. The decor is nautical-themed, which only adds to the experience. This restaurant is a must-go, especially if you love seafood! I recommend the Clam Chowder.
Podnah's BBQ
The beer and brisket were delicious at Podnah’s. True, this place is not down south, but if you are in Portland and happen to be craving barbecue, this is the place to go!
Portland Pie Co.
As a native New Yorker, I am kind of a pizza snob (if that’s even a thing)… but this pizza was pretty good! What really put this restaurant on the list was the pizza-shaped desserts. The S’mores Dessert Pie was to die for!
What do I do for 24 hours in Portland?

Go Shopping in Old Port
Check out the cute shops in the iconic Old Port District, known for its cobblestone streets and brick buildings! Here I found some unique trinkets to bring home to family and friends as souvenirs.

Portland Head Light and Fort Williams Park
Both the lighthouse and the surrounding park are absolutely beautiful. The day I went it was extremely overcast and grey. Despite this, it was still gorgeous and made for some very nice photos. I would highly recommend putting this park on your to-do list during your 24 hours in Portland.

Seek out Photo Ops
Portland is one of the most picturesque cities I have seen. There are plenty of opportunities for photos, whether you are interested in fancy architecture, cobblestone roads, or bodies of water, this city really does have it all. Just wander around and you will most definitely find something worth photographing.
Get Lost & Explore
As stated earlier, Portland is not a very big city. For this reason it is the PERFECT place to lose yourself and see what you find. Especially if you only have one day to see the city, it may be best to go at it without a plan. Sometimes this is the best way to travel.
